What is the difference between a large wheel and a small wheel in a wheelchair?

1. Different abilities

The large wheels carry the main weight. There are several types of wheels with diameters of 51, 56, 61, and 66cm. Except for a few environmental requirements that require solid tires, pneumatic tires are commonly used.

There are several types of car wheels with diameters of 12, 15, 18, and 20cm, and small wheels with larger diameters are easy to cross small obstacles and special carpets. But the diameter is too large, which increases the space occupied by the entire wheelchair and makes it inconvenient to move. A normal small wheel is placed before the big wheel, but in a wheelchair used for lower limb paraplegia, the small wheel is often placed after the big wheel. It should be noted during operation that the direction of the small wheel should be perpendicular to the large wheel, otherwise it may tip over easily.

2. Different usage methods

The biggest difference between a big wheel and a small wheel is that the big wheel user can push it themselves or have others push it from behind, while a small wheel wheelchair can only be pushed by others. Generally speaking, the likelihood of elderly people pushing themselves is very low.

So choosing a big wheel or a small wheel mainly depends on whether it needs to be moved upstairs or downstairs. If it needs to be moved above the third floor, it is relatively lightweight. If it is an elevator room or the ground floor, there is no problem with moving, relatively speaking, the large wheel drive is slightly more labor-saving.
