Different diseases and injuries have special requirements for wheelchairs:

1. Paraplegic patients have basically the same requirements for wheelchairs, except that the balance control of the trunk should be considered for those with high thoracic spinal cord injury. The size of seats is determined by body measurement. Stepped short handrails are generally selected and casters locks are installed. If it is necessary to complete the transfer from the rear, a zipper can be placed on the backrest or a wheelchair with a tilting backrest can be selected; If it is necessary to transfer from the side, removable handrails shall be used. If the ankle has convulsions or clonus, add ankle straps and heel rings. When the road condition of the living environment is good, solid tires can be selected to improve the speed, and thick cushion can be used for shockproof.

2. The injured with C4 and above quadriplegia can choose the pneumatic control or annoyance control electric wheelchair or the wheel palsy operated by the nurse. The injured with C5 and below can operate the horizontal handle most through the flexion force of the upper limbs, so the high back electric wheelchair controlled by the forearm can be selected. The ones with better functions can choose the portable manual wheelchair. For patients with orthostatic hypotension, tilt type high back wheelchair shall be selected and head rest shall be installed; The detachable foot rest with adjustable knee angle shall be used. The axle shall be as far back as possible, the dumping bar shall be installed, and the thicker seat cushion shall be selected.

3. If hemiplegic patients have no cognitive impairment, good understanding and coordination, they can choose unilateral driving wheelchair; In case of serious illness, others shall be selected to push the wheelchair. For those with good balance function, standard wheelchairs with lower seats can be selected, and removable foot supports and leg supports can be installed, so that the foot can be fully grounded and the operation can be completed with the upper and lower limbs on the healthy side. For those who need help with transfer, it is better to use removable handrails.

4. Amputation

For amputees of both lower limbs, due to great changes in body weight, the axle is generally moved backward to prevent backward movement

Side dumping; Wheelchairs with large wheels in front can be used in the early stage. If there are artificial limbs, leg supports and foot supports should be installed.

5. Standard wheelchairs are generally used for the disabled of lower limbs and other lower limbs; The elderly, weak and seriously ill usually choose others to push the wheelchair. Other obstacles shall be comprehensively considered according to the degree of disability or injury, joint activity, muscle strength, weight, trunk balance, living environment, etc.
