How to choose a suitable electric wheelchair

2023-03-22handler1139

Electric wheelchairs serve users, and each user's situation is different. When selecting, we must conduct a comprehensive and detailed evaluation based on the user's height and weight, daily needs, use environment and other factors in order to select the appropriate electric wheelchair:

(1) Seat width: measure the distance between the two buttocks or the two thighs when sitting down, add 5cm, that is, there is a gap of 2.5cm on each side after sitting down. If the seat is too narrow, it will be difficult to get on and off the wheelchair. The buttocks and thighs will be oppressed; if the seat is too wide, it will be difficult to sit firmly, and it will be inconvenient to operate the wheelchair.

(2) Seat length: measure the horizontal distance from the buttocks to the gastrocnemius of the calf when sitting down, and subtract 6.5cm from the measurement result. If the seat is too short, the weight will mainly fall on the ischia, which will easily cause excessive local pressure; if the seat is too long, it will oppress the popliteal fossa, affect local blood circulation, and easily irritate the skin. For patients with shorter thighs or hip and knee flexion contractures, it is better to use a short seat.

(3) Seat height: measure the distance from the heel (or heel) to the socket of the chin when sitting down, plus 4cm. When placing the pedals, the board surface should be at least 5cm from the ground. If the seat is too high, the wheelchair cannot enter the table; if the seat is too low, the sit bones bear too much weight.

(4) Chair back height: The higher the chair back, the more stable, and the lower the chair back, the greater the activity of the upper body and upper limbs. Low chair back: measure the distance from the sitting surface to the armpit (with the arm or both arms stretched forward), and subtract 10cm from the result. High chair back: measure the actual height from the seat surface to the shoulder or the back pillow.

(5) Armrest height: When sitting down, the upper arm is vertical, the forearm is placed flat on the armrest, and the height from the seat surface to the lower edge of the forearm is measured, plus 2.5cm. Proper armrest height helps maintain correct body posture and balance, and allows the upper body to be placed in a comfortable position. If the armrest is too high, the upper arm is forced to lift up and is prone to fatigue. If the armrest is too low, you need to lean your upper body forward to maintain balance, which will not only cause fatigue, but also affect breathing.
