Have you ever slipped and fallen while taking a shower? For younger people, it may be just a minor scratch. However, for seniors, a slip and fall can represent a significant risk, possibly even a close call to death. According to the "Guidelines for Fall Intervention in the Elderly" issued by the Ministry of Health of China, in the United States, more than 30% of elderly people over the age of 65 will fall every year. And complications from falls are one of the leading causes of death or serious injury for people over 65.
Why are elderly people prone to falls when taking a bath?
This is mainly attributed to the following three factors: physiological aging, bathroom environment, and disease factors. In terms of physiological aging, as age increases, the knee joints of the elderly may deform, affecting the stability of gait; visual and auditory functions weaken; muscle mass decreases, bone degeneration, and reaction and balance abilities decrease. In terms of the bathroom environment, slippery floors and the use of toiletries such as shower gel increase the risk of slips and falls, and there are fewer objects to grab onto in the bathroom. As for disease factors, elderly people with diseases such as heart disease or high blood pressure may bear extra burden on their cardiovascular and cerebrovascular vessels when the temperature changes, causing dizziness and thus increasing the risk of falling.
Therefore, it is very necessary to prepare a bath chair for the elderly.
