Wheelchair dance is a major event in the National Paralympic Games and also the event with the strongest artistic atmosphere. Although disabled people are in wheelchairs, it does not limit their superb dancing skills.
Wheelchair danceis derived from sports dance. The most important thing about sports dance is the pace and rhythm. Unlike sports dance for healthy people, wheelchair dancers sit in wheelchairs. Most of them are disabled people with lower body paralysis or amputation. In the competition, in order to prevent accidents, some players fix their legs on the wheelchair with elastic strips. Although disabled people are in wheelchairs, it does not limit their superb dancing skills. They mainly show upper body movements, using wheelchairs instead of legs to move. They adjust the posture of the wheelchair with their hands while making graceful dance postures. The difficult movements attract applause from the audience.
Wheelchair dance was first created in the UK. It emerged in Guangzhou, China in 2007 and became popular in China. There are many wheelchair dance enthusiasts all over the country, among which Guangdong and Hong Kong are the strongest. Wheelchair dance in this Paralympic Games includes four events: double wheelchair standard dance, double wheelchair Latin dance, mixed standard dance, mixed Latin dance, and group dance performance. The group dance will be the last show on the last day, showing the ingenuity of each team and the artistic attainments of the disabled. Each program is jointly created and participated by multiple wheelchair athletes and standing dancers.
