Based on the extended brain computer interface, researchers from Moscow Institute of Engineering Physics, Russian National Nuclear Energy Research University developed a new intelligent wheelchair control system for disabled people. The results were published in the proceedings of the conference on biological cognitive structure.

The use of multi-channel intelligent wheelchair is very important for people with limited mobility. Patients usually can only use their hands to complete some small movements and give voice or mental instructions. Different control channels have their own disadvantages: the traditional joystick may not be suitable for people with severely limited movement ability. Therefore, voice control channel, gesture control channel and brain computer interface channel are also needed. All of these channels are called extended brain computer interfaces.

Generally speaking, the control channel can be used at the same time, but in this case, conflicting instructions may be given. For example, the voice control channel recognizes the turn right command, while the gesture control channel determines to issue the turn left command. Therefore, when a conflict situation occurs, the task to select the "correct" instruction is generated.

In order to solve this kind of conflict, researchers propose a decomposition method of control system. Its principle is to evaluate the quality of each control channel according to a specific quality coefficient, and combine this or that instruction with a channel. An instruction to select a priority channel in the event of a conflict.

At present, the researchers plan to carry out laboratory tests on intelligent wheelchair for the disabled in order to improve the channel quality evaluation method and minimize the error of wheelchair users in selecting system control instructions.
